About Current Choices

Current Choices was created by Devesh Khanal, the co-founder of the search engine optimization (SEO) and content marketing agency Grow and Convert and the founder of the AB testing agency Growth Rock.

Devesh created Current Choices as a way to use his SEO skills to help in the battle to reach net zero carbon emissions. The goal is to use Google searches as a way to help nudge consumers to more carbon friendly choices. Specifically, just like his SEO firm helps rank clients for search terms that indicate someone is considering products in their space and producing an article that touts the client’s product’s benefits, Devesh realized he could do the same for important consumer choices that have an effect on carbon emissions. Current Choices aims to write articles that rank for search terms that indicate someone is considering a carbon-friendly purchase decision and openly and honestly explains the benefits of the carbon friendly decision over the carbon-emitting decision, in hopes that it will nudge thousands of people Googling these things towards the carbon friendly choice.

As the first topic, we’re focused on Heat Pumps or what we call “two way ACs“. Heat pumps are air conditioners that run in both directions: they can heat or cool your home by pumping heat out of or into it.

Many in the energy sector consider heat pumps an essential aspect of getting to net zero because we’ll need to ween ourselves off of gas or oil heating eventually and heat pumps are extremely efficient vs gas furnaces. But heat pumps are new and consumers aren’t as familiar with them.

So our first goal is to rank for search terms that indicate someone is considering replacing their furnace or debating whether to get a heat pump or a furnace. For example our first post targets the search term: heat pump vs furnace, another targets heat pump vs air conditioner.

About Devesh Khanal

Devesh has a B.S. in Physics from Lewis and Clark College and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from U.C. Berkeley, where he wrote his thesis on the electronic properties of certain semiconductor nano materials. His goal when joining the materials program at Berkeley was to use science to contribute to solar enegery or, more broadly, renewable energy research and development.

Life took Devesh on a different path, through the business route where, as explained above, he ended up building an expertise in online marketing. So, almost 20 years after he began his Ph.D. process at Berkeley, life took him full circle back to his goal, via Current Choices, to contribute to carbon reduction, albeit not through R&D, but through content.

How You Can Help

If you are interested in helping with our mission to nudge consumers towards climate-friendly choices, there are several ways you can help:

  • If you have a website of any kind, you can link to our homepage, this page, or to any of our articles. The more links we get, the more Google ranks us for these search terms. The higher we rank, the more people we can nudge towards the climate friendly choice.
  • If you are a writer, you can apply to write for us or volunteer to write for us pro-bono (we’ll link to whatever social profile you want and even mention that you are available for hire and where people can get ahold of you). Email us here to apply.
